June 09 Challenge Prompts

Description

Here are the club writing challenges for this month!

- Write a cyclical piece. For instance, James Joyce's Ulysses begins in the middle of a sentence. When you get to the end of the book, the last line is the beginning part of the sentence from the beginning of the book, creating a loop. Or you might be familiar with the book The Outsiders, which begins and ends in the same manner. Your challenge is to write a poem or short story that begins and ends with the same line or paragraph, or a poem or short story with lines that finish each other.

- Something summer-themed, as summer is finally upon us. Try to use the words pooling, verdant, placid, parched, and/or lush. Use as much imagery as possible; really appeal to the senses!

- Write about something by writing about something else. This is essentially the most extensive form of metaphor. It is a tried and true literary tradition. Robert Frost was writing about two roads in "The Road Less Traveled," but he was actually writing about life choices. Nathaniel Hawthorne was writing about the dark experiences of Goodman Brown in "The Story of Young Goodman Brown," but he was actually writing about a man whose deep, dark doubts ultimately cause him to lose his faith. Try writing a story or poem in which you use something to talk about something else.

- Write a comparison poem or story (in the form of a love letter, for instance), in which you create a character by comparing things to other things. This is also a trend steeped in literary tradition; a current example is "Litany" by Billy Collins, which you can read here: [link] . You might describe your kitten as "the dustbunnies and the milk droplets, the window and the birds on the lawn". Be creative!
